HOW DOES THE SAN DIEGO COASTER TRAIN WORK?
From Oceanside to San Diego, the Coaster takes just over an hour. During the journey, eight stations are serviced, providing breathtaking views.
On the weekends, NCTD Coaster offers 20 trains, providing easy, reliable access to most of San Diego's coastline. According to plan, the line was originally intended as a commuter train, transporting people between North County and the city and surrounding employment centers. It is, however, also attractive to tourists and those who do not like to drive.
By using it, you can easily get in and out of the city based on what you want to do today. Traveling is easier this way, so riders can enjoy themselves more.
By visiting the NCTD Coaster website, you can check the San Diego Coaster schedule.
Two stations are connected with the San Diego Trolley, further expanding options within the surrounding area. All stations are connected to local bus routes. More information is available at each station or on their website.
There are Customer Service Centers, located at most stations, as well as vending machines throughout the system.
With the Pronto Card, they can also transfer money between Trolley and bus networks easily. Tap the pad when boarding the train with a Pronto Card loaded at the kiosks or by using the app. Don't forget to tap after the ride to prevent overcharging.
Ticket prices for round-trips covering the entire length only run $13, with shorter rides costing much less. More frequent travelers can purchase day passes or monthly passes. You can also transfer for free within two hours of activation to the Breeze commuter shuttle (in Sorrento Valley) or Escondidos Sprinter light rail (in Oceanside). Amtrak fares can sometimes apply to rides along the same route.
SORRENTO VALLEY
A commuter station serves in Sorrento Valley as a link between homes and industries. Small shops sit near the tracks, catering to workers on lunch breaks, but there are no tourist attractions.
To get to Miramar and Torrey Pines, workers can take the Breeze or MTS buses. Most visitors appreciate the vistas from this station, although it is merely a place where you glide through.
The DEL MAR FESTIVAL STATION is hosting a special event
A temporary NCTD station is located alongside the Del Mar Fairgrounds, situated between the Sorrento Valley and Solana Beach stations.
SOLANA BEACH
As the Coaster approaches Solana Beach from the south, it crosses within inches of the Del Mar bluffs in a scenic and threatened section of its route. To get an optimal view, choose a seat on the left (right) when heading north.
ENCINITAS
In Encinitas, as at the previous station in Solana Beach, the station opens directly onto the 101, in an area filled with hip and fun stores, restaurants, and bars. The region is also home to several attractions, both for tourists and locals.
In San Diego Botanic Gardens, the city is known as the "Flower Capital of the World.". Along the coast, it's one of the most beautiful places to enjoy nature.
In the San Dieguito Historical Museum, just outside the gardens, much of Encinitas's past is on display. Self-Realization Fellowship lies just south of town, west of the railroad tracks. This faith maintains free meditation gardens overlooking the Pacific Ocean for its followers.
If you're looking for an active adventure, you'll find surfing and stand-up paddle boarding nearby. The Manchester Preserve and San Elijo Lagoon, both of which are just a short ride from the station, are excellent hiking areas further inland.
CARLSBAD POINSETTIA
Carlsbad's larger attractions are easy to access from this stop. There are several attractions within easy reach, including Lego Land, Green Dragon Tavern, and the Sea Life Aquarium within a short ride on a bus, bike, or rideshare. Last but not least, this brewery houses an odd collection of Revolution-era Americana.
You can access the beach and find a few shops closer to the station. Commuters and tourists are the main targets of this location, however.
OCEANSIDE
At Oceanside, the San Diego Coaster ends (or begins). There are so many fun things to do and cute little beach towns in this region.
A sunset photo opportunity is provided by the Oceanside Pier as you stroll along the ocean. Thursdays are perfect for checking out the Farmers Market during the day or the Night Market at night. There's also a surf museum to check out. For a special treat, try Valle, which just won Michelin recognition, or Wrench and Rodent Seabasstropub. There are plenty of good restaurants down Mission Avenue as well!
