Tijuana
Mexicos Baja California
Your first reaction may be to be a bit confused when you hear the term Baja. Isn't Baja just another word for under? As a result, Mexico comes under the jurisdiction of California. Exactly, the Baja California region is the state below California in Mexico. There are two states on this westernmost peninsula of Mexico: Baja California in the north and Baja California Sur in the south.
As the Pacific Ocean lies on the west, the Gulf of California lies on the east, and this is the majority of Mexico's main landmass. Both tourists and locals from both Mexico and the United States flock to Ensenada's port and the nearby wine country in Valle de Guadalupe.
The southernmost tip of the Baja peninsula is dominated by the beach resort town of Cabo San Lucas. Obviously, today we are focusing on Tijuana, the northernmost city in Baja California. At least, among residents of Southern California, it's equally famous as Cabo.
We highly recommend visiting the best wineries in Valle de Guadalupe, which can be enjoyed as a day trip from San Diego by private transportation or independent travel.
Visiting Tijuana
Tijuana is popular with tourists who are interested in Mexican cuisine, good beaches, and Mexican culture. Mexican food, Tijuana tours, craft beer, and easy access to downtown San Diego are sure to make your Tijuana trip enjoyable. Street tacos and market shopping before heading to a San Diego museum or hitting the beach can be refreshing. There is literally everything you can imagine for your day in Tijuana.
Beaches
Beach in Tijuana
Despite the great food and bustling nightlife, Tijuana isn't the only place that draws visitors. It is well-known that Tijuana beaches are beautiful and conveniently located. Playas de Tijuana is the name of the main beach in Tijuana. A favorite spot for surfers is Baja Malibu, a sandy area that can get busy on weekends as surfers look to catch waves right off the main beach.
A 20-minute drive south will take you to Playas de Rosarito, while 45 minutes south will take you to La Fonda. Tijuana itself offers great beaches if you're just looking for a day trip from San Diego. A fantastic beach day is just minutes away from the city center, and you don't have to go very far along the coastline.
About the San Ysidro Border
There is no doubt that San Ysidro Port of Entry is the world's busiest international land border crossing. When we look at crossings from the U.S. to Mexico and vice versa, it makes sense.
Both sides of the border commute daily or weekly between their home and work, family, and other places. It has grown to see over 90000 commuters cross the border every day between San Diego and Tijuana since opening in 1970. In addition to the 106 million crossings per year at San Ysidro, there are 48 million vehicles crossing as well.
As an example, LA locals might travel to Glendale every day for work or to visit relatives. Bordering Tijuana is an international city.
Otay Mesa Border Crossing
In comparison to central San Diego to central Tijuana, the Otay Mesa border crossing is more out of the way, making it much faster to cross.
On the Tijuana side, access is more difficult due to the Tijuana border crossing points on I-5 and I-805. Leaving Tijuana via the San Ysidro Port of Entry will be easier.
