As indicated earlier, cool (white) roofs use reflective materials or coatings to reflect a portion of the incident short-wave solar radiation, which lowers the rooftop surface temperature compared to black roofs. The questions are: (a) do cool roofs lead to risk of condensation and mold growth in saudi climates?, (b) what are the amount of energy savings as result of using cool roofs instead of black roofs?, and (c) what is the reduction in the amount of insulation in a cool roof having the same energy performance level as the black roofs? to answer these questions, numerical simulations were conducted for a roofing system that is commonly used in low-rise saudi buildings of different insulation thicknesses in order to compare the energy and moisture performance of cool roofs of different short-wave absorption coefficients with that of black roofs.
